ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ದಾವೀದನೂ ಅಬೀಷೈಯೂ ರಾತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ಜನರ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದರು. ಇಗೋ, ಸೌಲನು ಕಂದಕದೊಳಗೆ ಮಲಗಿ ನಿದ್ರೆಮಾಡು ತ್ತಿದ್ದನು; ಅವನ ಈಟಿಯು ಅವನ ತಲೆದಿಂಬಿನ ಬಳಿ ಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಟ್ಟಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಅವನ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಅಬ್ನೇರನೂ ಜನರೂ ಮಲಗಿದ್ದರು.

5ದಾವೀ ದನು ಎದ್ದು ಸೌಲನು ಇಳುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದನು; ಸೌಲನೂ ಅವನ ದಂಡಿನ ನಾಯಕನಾಗಿ ರುವ ನೇರನ ಮಗನಾದ ಅಬ್ನೇರನೂ ಮಲಗಿರುವ ಸ್ಥಳವನ್ನು ದಾವೀದನು ನೋಡಿದನು. ಆದರೆ ಸೌಲನು ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಲಗಿದ್ದನು; ಜನರು ಅವನ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ದಂಡಾಗಿ ಇಳಿದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು.
6ಆಗ ದಾವೀದನು ಹಿತ್ತಿಯನಾದ ಅಹೀಮೆಲೆಕನನ್ನೂ ಚೆರೂಯಳ ಮಗ ನಾಗಿರುವ ಯೋವಾಬನ ಸಹೋದರನಾದ ಅಬೀಷೈ ಯನ್ನೂ ನೋಡಿ--ನನ್ನ ಸಂಗಡ ದಂಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರವೇಶಿ ಸಲು ಬರುವವನು ಯಾರೆಂದು ಕೇಳಿದನು; ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಅಬೀಷೈಯು--ನಾನು ನಿನ್ನ ಸಂಗಡ ಬರುವೆನು ಅಂದನು.
7ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ದಾವೀದನೂ ಅಬೀಷೈಯೂ ರಾತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ಜನರ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದರು. ಇಗೋ, ಸೌಲನು ಕಂದಕದೊಳಗೆ ಮಲಗಿ ನಿದ್ರೆಮಾಡು ತ್ತಿದ್ದನು; ಅವನ ಈಟಿಯು ಅವನ ತಲೆದಿಂಬಿನ ಬಳಿ ಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಟ್ಟಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಅವನ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಅಬ್ನೇರನೂ ಜನರೂ ಮಲಗಿದ್ದರು.
8ಆಗ ಅಬೀಷೈಯು ದಾವೀ ದನಿಗೆ--ಈ ಹೊತ್ತು ದೇವರು ನಿನ್ನ ಶತ್ರುವನ್ನು ನಿನ್ನ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾನೆ; ಈಗ ನಾನು ಅವನನ್ನು ಈಟಿಯಿಂದ ಒಂದೇ ಪೆಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲಕ್ಕೆ ಹತ್ತುವಂತೆ ಹೊಡೆಯಲು ಅಪ್ಪಣೆ ಕೊಡಬೇಕು; ಎರಡು ಸಾರಿ ಹೊಡೆಯುವದಿಲ್ಲ ಅಂದನು.
9ಆದರೆ ದಾವೀದನು ಅಬೀಷೈಯನಿಗೆ -- ಅವನನ್ನು ಸಂಹರಿಸಬೇಡ; ಯಾಕಂದರೆ ಕರ್ತನ ಅಭಿಷಿಕ್ತನಿಗೆ ವಿರೋಧವಾಗಿ ಕೈ ಹಾಕುವವನು ನಿರಪರಾಧಿಯಾಗುವದಿಲ್ಲ ಅಂದನು.
