ಗಿದ್ಯೋನನು ಜನರನ್ನು ಜಲದ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಕರಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದನು. ಆಗ ಕರ್ತನು ಗಿದ್ಯೋನನಿಗೆನಾಯಿ ನೆಕ್ಕುವ ಹಾಗೆ ಜಲವನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ನಾಲಿಗೆಯಿಂದ ನೆಕ್ಕುವ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬನನ್ನೂ ಕುಡಿಯುವದಕ್ಕೆ ಮೊಣ ಕಾಲೂರಿ ಬೊಗ್ಗುವ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬನನ್ನೂ ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಯಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸು ಅಂದನು.

King James Version (KJV): So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.

3ಆದದರಿಂದ ನೀನು ಹೋಗಿ ಜನರು ಕೇಳುವ ಹಾಗೆ--ಯಾವನಿಗೆ ಭಯವೂ ಹೆದರಿ ಕೆಯೂ ಉಂಟೋ ಅವನು ತಿರಿಗಿ ತ್ವರೆಯಾಗಿ ಗಿಲ್ಯಾದ್‌ ಬೆಟ್ಟದಿಂದ ಹೋಗಲಿ ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಕಟಮಾಡು ಅಂದನು. ಆಗ ಜನರಲ್ಲಿ ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತೆರಡು ಸಾವಿರ ತಿರುಗಿ ಹೋದರು; ಹತ್ತು ಸಾವಿರ ಮಂದಿ ಉಳಿದರು.
4ಕರ್ತನು ಗಿದ್ಯೋನನಿಗೆ--ಜನರು ಇನ್ನೂ ಬಹಳ ವಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ; ಅವರನ್ನು ಜಲದ ಸವಿಾಪಕ್ಕೆ ಇಳಿದು ಹೋಗುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡು. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನು ಅವರನ್ನು ನಿನಗೋಸ್ಕರ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಮಾಡುವೆನು; ಯಾರು ನಿನ್ನ ಸಂಗಡ ಹೋಗಬಹುದೆಂದು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವನನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ಹೇಳುವೆನೋ ಅವನು ನಿನ್ನ ಸಂಗಡ ಹೋಗಲಿ. ಆದರೆ ನಾನು--ನಿನ್ನ ಸಂಗಡ ಬರಬಾರದೆಂದು ಯಾವನ ಕುರಿತಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುವೆನೋ ಅವನು ಹೋಗಬಾರದು ಅಂದನು.
5ಗಿದ್ಯೋನನು ಜನರನ್ನು ಜಲದ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಕರಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದನು. ಆಗ ಕರ್ತನು ಗಿದ್ಯೋನನಿಗೆನಾಯಿ ನೆಕ್ಕುವ ಹಾಗೆ ಜಲವನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ನಾಲಿಗೆಯಿಂದ ನೆಕ್ಕುವ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬನನ್ನೂ ಕುಡಿಯುವದಕ್ಕೆ ಮೊಣ ಕಾಲೂರಿ ಬೊಗ್ಗುವ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬನನ್ನೂ ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ಯಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸು ಅಂದನು.
6ಆಗ ತಮ್ಮ ಕೈಯಿಂದ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ತಮ್ಮ ಬಾಯಿಗೆ ಎತ್ತಿ ನೆಕ್ಕಿದವರ ಲೆಕ್ಕವು ಮುನ್ನೂರು ಜನವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಉಳಿದ ಜನರೆಲ್ಲಾ ನೀರು ಕುಡಿಯುವದಕ್ಕೆ ಮೊಣಕಾಲೂರಿ ಬೊಗ್ಗಿದರು.
7ಆಗ ಕರ್ತನು ಗಿದ್ಯೋನನಿಗೆ--ನೆಕ್ಕಿ ಕುಡಿದ ಆ ಮುನ್ನೂರು ಜನರಿಂದ ನಾನು ನಿಮ್ಮನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿ ಮಿದ್ಯಾನ್ಯರನ್ನು ನಿನ್ನ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಡುವೆನು; ಇತರ ಜನರೆಲ್ಲಾ ತಮ್ಮ ತಮ್ಮ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಲಿ ಅಂದನು.
