ಅಹಜ್ಯನು ಆಳಲು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದಾಗ ನಾಲ್ವತ್ತೆರಡು ವರುಷದವ ನಾಗಿದ್ದು ಯೆರೂಸಲೇಮಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ವರುಷ ಆಳಿ ದನು. ಅವನ ತಾಯಿಯ ಹೆಸರು ಅತಲ್ಯಳು; ಈಕೆಯು ಒಮ್ರಿಯ ಮಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದಳು.

1ಯೆರೂಸಲೇಮಿನ ನಿವಾಸಿಗಳು ಅವನಿಗೆ ಬದಲಾಗಿ ಅವನ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಮಗನಾದ ಅಹಜ್ಯ ನನ್ನು ಅರಸನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ದಂಡಿಗೆ ಬಂದ ಅರಬ್ಬಿಯರ ಗುಂಪು ಹಿರಿಯರನ್ನೆಲ್ಲಾ ಕೊಂದುಹಾಕಿ ದರು. ಹೀಗೆ ಯೆಹೋರಾಮನ ಮಗನಾದ ಅಹಜ್ಯನು ಯೆಹೂದದ ಅರಸನಾಗಿ ಆಳಿದನು.

3ಅವನು ಅಹಾಬನ ಮನೆ ಯವರ ಮಾರ್ಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದನು. ಹೇಗಂದರೆ ದುಷ್ಟ ನಾಗಿರುವದಕ್ಕೆ ಅವನ ತಾಯಿ ಅವನಿಗೆ ಆಲೋಚನೆ ಹೇಳುವವಳಾಗಿದ್ದಳು.
4ಆದಕಾರಣ ಅವನು ಅಹಾಬನ ಮನೆಯವರ ಹಾಗೆ ಕರ್ತನ ಸಮ್ಮುಖದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಟ್ಟದ್ದನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದನು. ಅವನ ತಂದೆ ಸತ್ತ ತರುವಾಯ ಇವರು ಅವರ ನಾಶನಕ್ಕೆ ಅವನ ಸಲಹೆಗಾರರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.
