1. 28ശാസ്ത്രിമാരിൽ ഒരുവൻ അടുത്തുവന്നു അവർ തമ്മിൽ തർക്കിക്കുന്നതു കേട്ടു അവൻ അവരോടു നല്ലവണ്ണം ഉത്തരം പറഞ്ഞപ്രകാരം ബോധിച്ചിട്ടു: എല്ലാറ്റിലും മുഖ്യകല്പന ഏതു എന്നു അവനോടു ചോദിച്ചു. അതിന്നു യേശു:
2. 29എല്ലാറ്റിലും മുഖ്യകല്പനയോ: “യിസ്രായേലേ, കേൾക്ക; നമ്മുടെ ദൈവമായ കർത്താവു ഏകകർത്താവു.
3. 30നിന്റെ ദൈവമായ കർത്താവിനെ നീ പൂർണ്ണഹൃദയത്തോടും പൂർണ്ണാത്മാവോടും പൂർണ്ണമനസ്സോടും പൂർണ്ണശക്തിയോടും കൂടെ സ്നേഹിക്കേണം” എന്നു ആകുന്നു.
4. 31രണ്ടാമത്തേതോ: “കൂട്ടുകാരനെ നിന്നെപ്പോലെ തന്നേ സ്നേഹിക്കേണം” എന്നത്രേ; ഇവയിൽ വലുതായിട്ടു മറ്റൊരു കല്പനയും ഇല്ല എന്നു ഉത്തരം പറഞ്ഞു.
5. 32ശാസ്ത്രി അവനോടു: നന്നു, ഗുരോ, നീ പറഞ്ഞതു സത്യം തന്നേ; ഏകനേയുള്ളൂ; അവനല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊരുത്തനുമില്ല.
