ಆದರೆ ನಾವು--ಮನುಷ್ಯರಿಂದ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವದಾದರೆ ನಮಗೆ ಜನರ ಭಯವಿದೆ; ಯಾಕಂದರೆ ಯೋಹಾನನು ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಪ್ರವಾದಿಯೆಂದು ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಎಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವರು ಎಂದು ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ತರ್ಕಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು.ಅವರು ಪ್ರತ್ಯುತ್ತರವಾಗಿ ಯೇಸುವಿಗೆ--ನಾವು ಹೇಳಲಾರೆವು ಎಂದು ಉತ್ತರ ಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಯೇಸು--ನಾನು ಯಾವ ಅಧಿಕಾರ ದಿಂದ ಇವುಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆಂದು ನಾನೂ ನಿಮಗೆ ಹೇಳುವದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತರ ಕೊಟ್ಟನು.

30ಯೋಹಾನನ ಬಾಪ್ತಿಸ್ಮವು ಪರಲೋಕದಿಂದಲೋ ಇಲ್ಲವೆ ಮನುಷ್ಯರಿಂದಲೋ, ನನಗೆ ಉತ್ತರಕೊಡಿರಿ ಅಂದನು.
31ಆಗ ಅವರು --ಪರಲೋಕದಿಂದ ಎಂದು ನಾವು ಹೇಳಿದರೆ--ನೀವು ಯಾಕೆ ಅವನನ್ನು ನಂಬಲಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿ ಯಾನು;

33ಅವರು ಪ್ರತ್ಯುತ್ತರವಾಗಿ ಯೇಸುವಿಗೆ--ನಾವು ಹೇಳಲಾರೆವು ಎಂದು ಉತ್ತರ ಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಯೇಸು--ನಾನು ಯಾವ ಅಧಿಕಾರ ದಿಂದ ಇವುಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆಂದು ನಾನೂ ನಿಮಗೆ ಹೇಳುವದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತರ ಕೊಟ್ಟನು.
