वे कहते हैं, क्या कारए है कि हम ने तो उपवास रखा, परन्तु तू ने इसकी सुधि नहीं ली? हम ने दु:ख उठाया, परन्तु तू ने कुछ ध्यान नहीं दिया? सुनो, उपवास के दिन तुम अपनी ही इच्छा पूरी करते हो और अपने सेवकों से कठिन कामों को कराते हो।

Ve kahate haim, kyaa kaarae hai ki ham ne to upavaas rakhaa, parantu too ne isakee sudhi naheem lee? Ham ne du:kh uthaayaa, parantu too ne kuchh dhyaan naheem diyaa? Suno, upavaas ke din tum apanee hee ichchhaa pooree karate ho aur apane sevakom se kathin kaamom ko karaate ho.

King James Version (KJV): Wherefore have we fasted, [say they], and thou seest not? [wherefore] have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.

4सुनो, तुम्हारे उपवास का फल यह होता है कि तुम आपस में लड़ते और झगड़ते और दुष्टता से घूंसे मारते हो। जैसा उपवास तुम आजकर रखते हो, उस से तुम्हारी प्रार्थना ऊपर नहीं सुनाई देगी।
5जिस उपवास से मैं प्रसन्न होता हूं अर्थात् जिस में मनुष्य स्वयं को दीन करे, क्या तुम इस प्रकार करते हो? क्या सिर को झाऊ की नाईं झुकाना, अपने नीचे टाट बिछाना, और राख फैनाने ही को तुम उपवास और यहोवा को प्रसन्न करने का दिन कहते हो?
