1കല്ദയരാജ്യത്തിന്നു രാജാവായിത്തീർന്നവനും മേദ്യസന്തതിയിൽ ഉള്ള അഹശ്വേരോശിന്റെ മകനുമായ ദാര്യാവേശിന്റെ ഒന്നാം ആണ്ടിൽ,
2അവന്റെ വാഴ്ചയുടെ ഒന്നാം ആണ്ടിൽ തന്നേ, ദാനീയേൽ എന്ന ഞാൻ: യെരൂശലേമിന്റെ ശൂന്യാവസ്ഥ എഴുപതു സംവത്സരംകൊണ്ടു തീരും എന്നിങ്ങനെ യഹോവയുടെ അരുളപ്പാടു യിരെമ്യാപ്രവാചകന്നുണ്ടായ പ്രകാരം ഒരു കാലസംഖ്യ പുസ്തകങ്ങളിൽനിന്നു ഗ്രഹിച്ചു.
3അപ്പോൾ ഞാൻ ഉപവസിച്ചും രട്ടുടുത്തും വെണ്ണീരിൽ ഇരുന്നുംകൊണ്ടു പ്രാർത്ഥനയോടും യാചനകളോടും കൂടെ അപേക്ഷിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നു ദൈവമായ കർത്താവിങ്കലേക്കു മുഖം തിരിച്ചു.
