ಒಂದು ವರುಷ ಕಳೆದ ತರುವಾಯ ಅರಸುಗಳು ಯುದ್ಧಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊರಡುವಾಗ ದಾವೀದನು ಯೋವಾಬನನ್ನೂ ಅವನ ಸಂಗಡವಿದ್ದ ಅವನ ಸೇವಕರನ್ನೂ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಇಸ್ರಾಯೇಲ್ಯರನ್ನೂ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದನು; ಅವರು ಅಮ್ಮೋನನ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಸಂಹ ರಿಸಿ ರಬ್ಬಕ್ಕೆ ಮುತ್ತಿಗೆ ಹಾಕಿದರು. ಆದರೆ ದಾವೀದನು ಇನ್ನೂ ಯೆರೂಸಲೇಮಿನಲ್ಲೇ ಕಾದಿದ್ದನು.

King James Version (KJV): And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth [to battle], that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.

2ಆಗ ಆದದ್ದೇನಂದರೆ, ದಾವೀದನು ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಸಾಯಂಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಹಾಸಿಗೆಯಿಂದ ಎದ್ದು ಅರಮನೆಯ ಉಪ್ಪರಿಗೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ತಿರುಗಾಡುತ್ತಾ ಇರುವಾಗ ಸ್ನಾನಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಒಬ್ಬ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಯನ್ನು ಉಪ್ಪರಿಗೆಯ ಮೇಲಿನಿಂದ ನೋಡಿದನು.
3ಆ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಯು ಮಹಾಸೌಂದರ್ಯ ರೂಪವುಳ್ಳವಳಾಗಿದ್ದಳು. ಆಗ ದಾವೀದನು ಆ ಸ್ತ್ರೀ ಯಾರೆಂದು ಕೇಳುವದಕ್ಕೆ--ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದಾಗ ಒಬ್ಬನು--ಅವಳು ಹಿತ್ತಿಯನಾದ ಊರೀಯನ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯಾಗಿರುವ ಎಲೀಯಾಮನ ಮಗಳಾದ ಬತ್ಷೆಬೆಯಲ್ಲವೋ ಅಂದನು.
